Different varieties of heathers in light green or non-flowering, which take on a fiery red colour as the cold sets in, are suitable for the autumn box. Festina fescue looks great with skimmia or foxglove. You can also choose stitchwort, holly, boxwood or common ivy.
Brassica ornamental cabbages can also be an interesting option; like heather, they take a breath of colour with the first frost and can keep creating a pleasant atmosphere on the balcony until Christmas. In autumn, the beautiful Calocephalus or Senecio with its beautiful silvery leaves are on sale, which will nicely complement, for example, chrysanthemums.
Even in autumn, hanging boxes look great. You can also use an old mushroom basket, line the bottom with a little drainage so that the water doesn't stick inside and freeze with the roots, and line the inside with plastic. Autumn bluebells, liriope, gentians, ocúnias and ornamental peppers are all suitable for planting.
If you also add bulbs and tubers of snowdrops, botanical tulips or daffodils, you will enjoy flowering boxes in spring that you have long forgotten about over the winter.
